Sysav granted support for continued efforts in carbon capture – a new milestone for the SkyZero project

The Swedish Energy Agency grants additional funding of SEK 28.4 million to Sysav for the implementation of the SkyZero project – Sysav’s long-term initiative for negative emissions through carbon capture and storage.

The funding is provided within the framework of the Swedish Energy Agency’s Industriklivet initiative, which aims to support projects with the potential to contribute to a climate-neutral society. The SkyZero project has been assessed as having a high level of innovation and novelty, with strong potential to support Sweden’s efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

“We are helping to shape an entirely new industry in Sweden. This is not just a project for Sysav, but part of a larger shift where we turn climate ambitions into action. With the support from the Swedish Energy Agency, we are taking a decisive step towards making carbon capture a part of the climate solutions of the future,” says Malin Dahlroth, CEO of Sysav.

Sysav’s goal is to have a facility in operation by 2030, capable of capturing up to 400,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year from the waste-to-energy plant in Malmö. When the biogenic carbon dioxide is permanently stored underground, it results in negative emissions – an important contribution to Sweden’s climate targets.

The project SkyZero – Concretisation focuses on creating the conditions for a future investment decision. The main activities include securing financial support, establishing supplier agreements, conducting environmental studies, and identifying potential revenue streams linked to carbon capture. The subproject runs from 1 January 2025 to 31 August 2026. An investment decision is planned for autumn 2027.

With this decision, Sysav marks a milestone in its climate work and in the development of technological solutions that enable negative emissions in Sweden.

Industriklivet is part of the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), an element of Next Generation EU. Industriklivet is a government initiative managed by the Swedish Energy Agency.
